How long is a free YouTube course? Hours by subject, from 267 courses
Updated 2026-10-14 · 6 min read
The typical free course on YouTube is about 24 hours long. That is the median of 267 complete courses we measured on 14 October 2026, across the 24 lists on our best courses pages: half are shorter, half are longer. At an hour a day, 24 hours is three and a half weeks.
The median hides how much the subject matters. A skill like Excel or SQL takes about 10 hours to watch. A university subject, from MIT or Stanford, takes 25 to 30, one term of lectures. Exam preparation is in another league: a single JEE subject course runs close to 100 hours, and the exam has three subjects.
Hours by subject
Each row is one of our lists, ranked by its typical (median) course. Shortest and longest are the extremes on that list. Every total is the whole playlist, counted to the last video, with private and deleted videos left out.

Two of our 24 lists, cloud certifications and SAT and AP, are left out of the table because only about half of their courses had been counted that day. Across all 24 lists, 28 courses had not been counted yet; the 267 are everything else.
Three kinds of course
The table falls into three groups, and knowing which one you are in tells you roughly what you are signing up for.
Skills, under 15 hours. Excel, SQL, JavaScript basics, a CompTIA certificate, a Crash Course series. These teach a tool or a survey of a field, and a typical one is done in two weeks at an hour a day. The long outliers here are usually advanced follow-ons (a business-intelligence class for Excel, a database-internals course for SQL), not slower versions of the same thing.
University subjects, 20 to 30 hours. Many university courses land close together: MIT's single-variable calculus is 28½ hours, CS50's 2025 lectures 26, Stanford's CS229 machine learning 28. That is a term of lectures, filmed. It does not include the problem sets, which can take as long again, so treat the total as the minimum.
Exam preparation, 30 to 100 hours a subject. UPSC, NEET, YKS, KPSS, GATE and JEE courses are long because the syllabus is, and the totals above are for one subject at a time. Physics Wallah's Class 11 physics for JEE is 98 hours; ABJ Sir's Class 11 and Class 12 physics are 184 and 195. Add the same teachers' chemistry and maths courses from our list and the three subjects come to about 1,070 hours. If that is you, the exam date guide works back from the day of the exam.
The same subject, five times over
Within one subject, the longest course is often five to ten times the shortest. They are not the same course taught faster or slower; they cover different ground.
- Python, 9 to 87 hours. CS50's Introduction to Programming with Python is 16 hours over 11 lectures. Corey Schafer's Python Tutorials is 87 hours over 158 videos, because it goes on from the basics into Flask, Django, Matplotlib and pandas; it works as a reference library as much as a course.
- Data structures and algorithms, 10 to 115 hours. mycodeschool's Data structures (10 hours) teaches the structures. Striver's A2Z DSA Course (115 hours, 315 videos) teaches them and then works through interview problems one by one.
- Machine learning, 4 to 73 hours. 3Blue1Brown's Neural networks is four hours of animated explanation in 10 videos. MIT's Introduction to Deep Learning keeps every year's lectures from 2018 to 2025 in one 73-hour playlist.
Before picking by length, open the playlist and look at the last few video titles. They tell you where the course ends.
Don't judge a course by its video count
Video count is a poor guide to length. Mohit Tyagi's calculus for JEE has 750 videos and takes 134 hours. Physics Wallah's NEET physics one-shot has 33 videos and takes 157 hours, because each video is a lecture of four or five hours. The ratio between two courses' video counts says almost nothing about the ratio between their lengths.
Some tools make this worse by adding up only the first 100 videos of a long playlist and stopping without saying so. A 455-hour course can come out as 91. How to spot a total that was cut short →
From hours to weeks
At an hour a day, every day:
| Course | At 1× | At 1.5× | At 2× |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 h | 10 days | 7 days | 5 days |
| 25 h | 25 days | 17 days | 13 days |
| 50 h | 7 weeks | 5 weeks | 4 weeks |
| 100 h | 14 weeks | 10 weeks | 7 weeks |
Faster playback saves time on talk-heavy lectures and very little on code-alongs, where you pause anyway. How much speed really saves, and what it costs →

Frequently asked
How many hours does it take to learn Python from YouTube?
The free Python courses we list run from 9 to 87 hours, and the typical one is 18. CS50's Python course is 16 hours of lectures, plus its problem sets. Plan at least as much time again for writing code.
Is a longer course better?
Not on its own. The longest course in a subject usually covers more topics or more practice problems, not the same topics in more depth. Pick the course that ends where you want to end, then plan its hours.
Why might a total here differ from the playlist today?
These totals were measured on 14 October 2026. Creators add, remove and reorder videos, and videos go private. The best courses pages show each total live, and any playlist's page shows its current length.
How were the courses chosen?
They are the courses on our best courses lists, picked by subject from university channels and the most-watched teachers, mostly ones our own visitors had measured. Each list says how its courses were chosen.
